Bio

Maestro Brian Garman, music director of Seattle Opera’s Young Artists Program, made his Seattle Opera mainstage debut during the 2009/2010 season, conducting Verdi’s La Traviata. With the Young Artists Program he has conducted Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Strauss's Ariadne auf Naxos, Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, and Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges. Garman has conducted many works for New York City Opera, most recently Bizet’s Carmen; Chabrier’s L’étoile and Verdi’s Un Giorno di Regno for Wolf Trap Opera; and Pittsburgh Opera’s productions of Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, Verdi’s Rigoletto, Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and Die Zauberflöte, and Massenet’s Werther, among others, as resident conductor of that company. As music director of the Pittsburgh Opera Center, he led such productions as Johann Strauss Jr.’s Die Fledermaus, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Puccini’s Rondine, Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi, and Verdi’s Il Corsaro. Maestro Garman was a senior member of the music staff of The Santa Fe Opera for six years, serving as associate conductor for numerous productions, and assisting in the musical preparation of over 25 different operas. He will be at the helm for Viva Verdi! with Seattle Opera's YAP later this season. Also a renowned pianist and vocal coach, he has served on the faculties of Mannes College of Music and Duquesne University School of Music, and frequently gives recitals and master classes around the United States.
