Bio

Stephen Wadsworth’s long history with Seattle Opera began when he directed Janácek’s Jenufa in 1985. Other productions here include Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice and Iphigénie en Tauride; Handel’s Xerxes; the world premiere of Hagen’s Amelia, for which Wadsworth also wrote the story; and Wagner’s Lohengrin, Der fliegende Holländer, and the Ring. He has also directed at the Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Vienna Staatsoper, on Broadway, and in London’s West End. His Fidelio plays this summer at Santa Fe Opera. He is a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, Head of Dramatic Studies at the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artists Development Program, and the James S. Marcus Faculty Fellow and Director of Opera Studies at the Juilliard School.
