Bio

English baritone Christopher Maltman made his U.S. debut at Seattle Opera in 2001 in the title role of Britten’s Billy Budd, a role he has also performed at Welsh National Opera and Teatro Regio in Turin. His Mozart credits include Guglielmo at Royal Opera Covent Garden in the Jonathan Miller production and at English National Opera, Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro at English National Opera, and Papageno in Die Zauberflöte at Glyndebourne Festival Opera. Maltman’s other roles at Glyndebourne include Ned Keene in Britten’s Peter Grimes and Sid in Britten’s Albert Herring. At Royal Opera, he created the role of Sebastian in the world premiere of Thomas Adés’ Tempest. Other appearances include Figaro in Rossini’s Barbiere di Siviglia at the Berlin Staatsoper and San Diego Opera, Tarquinius in Britten’s Rape of Lucretia at Bayerische Staatsoper and English National Opera, and Laurent in Tobias Picker’s Thérèse Raquin at San Diego Opera. Maltman made his Metropolitan Opera debut this season as Harlequin in Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos. Future engagements include Dr. Malatesta in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale at Royal Opera Covent Garden and Aeneas in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Vienna Festwochen. He returned to Seattle Opera in 2006 to sing Guglielmo.
