Gary Simpson


Gary Simpson first appeared at Seattle Opera as Amfortas in Wagner’s Parsifal and returned here as a Noble in Wagner’s Lohengrin. Other Wagner roles in his repertoire include the Dutchman in Der fliegende Holländer, Donner in Das Rheingold, Kurvenal in Tristan und Isolde, Telramund in Lohengrin, Gunther in Götterdämmerung, and Wotan in the Ring Cycle. Simpson has sung such Verdi roles as Amonasro in Aida, Count di Luna in Il Trovatore, Renato in Un ballo in maschera, Iago in Otello, and the title roles in Nabucco, Macbeth, and Falstaff. He has performed the title role of Verdi’s Rigoletto in the United States, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Spain, Portugal, and France. Simpson debuted at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Baron Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca, a role he also sang at Toledo Opera, Opernair Festival, and Graz Austria. Simpson joined the Met roster in 2007, and has recently performed at the Manaus Opera Festival in Brazil as the Dutchman, Palm Beach Opera as Tonio in Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci and Alfio in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, and Stadt Theater Hagen as Falstaff. He sings the Dutchman in Prague in2008.
