Harolyn Blackwell made her Seattle Opera debut as Marie in Donizetti’s Fille du regiment in 1990. She returned in 1995 as Gilda in Verdi’s Rigoletto (for which she won Seattle Opera’s Artist of the Year award) and in 2000 for the title roles in Delibes’ Lakmé and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. She has appeared in several productions at the Metropolitan Opera; her roles there include Marie in La fille du regiment, Oscar in Verdi’s Ballo in maschera (a role she reprised for the Met’s national telecast), Adele in J. Strauss, Jr.’s Fledermaus, and Sophie in Massenet’s Werther. Her many other U.S. credits include appearances with Lyric Opera of Chicago and San Francisco Opera. Abroad, Blackwell has sung with the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, Opéra de Nice, Netherlands Opera, and Canadian Opera as well as at the festivals of Glyndebourne and Aix-en-Provence. Other roles for Blackwell include Susanna in Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro, Blonde in Mozart’s Entführung aus dem Serail, Sister Constance in Poulenc’s Dialogues des Carmélites, and Cunegonde in Bernstein’s Candide on Broadway. Most recently, Blackwell has appeared at Seattle Opera as Norina in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale in 2003 and Olympia in Offenbach’s Contes d’Hoffmann.
