Irene Spiegelman made her Seattle Opera debut with the 2009 Ring. She has been the German language coach at the Metropolitan Opera since 1977, and is also teaching and coaching singers in its Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. Born in Berlin, Spiegelman holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in English literature, drama, and pedagogy, as well as a Ph.D. in nineteenth-century German literature from New York University. Specializing in interpretation, diction, and spoken dialogues, Spiegelman has served as German language coach for the New York Philharmonic, Glimmerglass Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, and the University of Maryland’s opera program. Since 2004 she has been a Lieder coach at the Marlboro Music Festival.
