Michael McGarty designed the sets for the world premiere of Jake Heggie’s End of the Affair at Houston Grand Opera. In New York, his theater designs include the Broadway production of Terrence McNally's Master Class, the Broadway revival of Wait Until Dark, the Broadway production of Julia Sweeney’s God Said, Ha!, and the off-Broadway premiere of McNally’s Stendhal Syndrome. He has designed sets for the world premieres of works by Lanford Wilson, Elaine May, Horton Foote, Beth Henley, and Alan Arkin, among others, at theaters across the country. In 1983, McGarty began his long association with Trinity Rep in Providence where he is a resident designer. In 2000, McGarty received the Barrymore Award in design for The Invention of Love.
