Nancy Maultsby


Nancy Maultsby made her Seattle Opera debut as Erda, Schwertleite, and the First Norn in the 1995 Ring production and returned in 2001 as Erda and Waltraute. She has sung Erda, the First Norn, and Waltraute with Lyric Opera of Chicagoand Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires. In 2005, she returned to Seattle’s Ring as Waltraute in Götterdämmerung. Other U.S. credits for Maultsby include Charlotte in Wertherin Seattle and Pittsburgh, the title role of Bizet’s Carmen in Seattle and San Francisco, and Pauline in Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame in Chicago. Abroad, this North Carolina mezzo’s performances include Fricka in the Ring in Stuttgart, the Omniscient Seashell in Richard Strauss’s Ägyptische Helena in London at Royal Opera Covent Garden, Jocasta in Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex in Naples, Rome, and Dresden, Maddalena in Verdi’s Rigoletto in Amsterdam, Amneris in Verdi’s Aida in Athens, and Judith in Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle in Montreal. Future engagements include Adalgisa in Bellini’s Norma at San Francisco Opera in October 2005, Prince Orlofsky in Johann Strauss, Jr.’s Fledermaus at Seattle Opera in January 2006, and Amneris at Opéra de Montréal in June 2006.
