Philip Skinner made his Seattle Opera debut in 1990 as Count Rostov and Jacquot in Prokofiev’s War and Peace and returned in 1992 to sing Don Fernando in Beethoven’s Fidelio. Skinner has performed at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, Teatro di San Carlo, and Théâtre de la Monnaie, among others. At San Francisco Opera, where he performed the Speaker in Mozart’s Zauberflöte this fall, he has sung over thirty roles since his 1985 debut, including the role of Escamillo. He also appears regularly with Opéra de Nantes, where his roles have included Filippo in Verdi’s Don Carlo and Count Almaviva in Mozart’s Nozze di Figaro. Recent engagements include Don Basilio in Rossini’s Barbiere di Siviglia at both Washington Opera and Minnesota Opera and Jochanaan in R. Strauss’s Salome at Atlanta Opera. Later this season, Skinner makes his Los Angeles Opera debut as the One-Eyed Brother in R. Strauss’s Frau ohne Schatten and sings Filippo in Dijon and Massy.
