Pier Luigi Pizzi
Set Designer

In 1951, after studying architecture in Milan, Pier Luigi Pizzi launched upon a career that has included extensive work as costume designer, set designer, production designer, art director, and director in the fields of opera, theater, cinema, and television. He has designed and/or directed for, among many others, Teatro alla Scala, Royal Opera Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, and the major French, German, and Swiss companies. The sets seen here for the 2007 production of La Bohème are among the ten Pizzi has designed for Lyric Opera of Chicago. Other long-term associations include thirty-eight years with Arena di Verona. Pizzi has won several Abbiati prizes and France awarded him the Légion d’honneur and named him Officier des artes et des lettres. Additional highlights include his sets for Berlioz’ Troyens, which opened the Paris Opéra-Bastille in 1990, and curating the layout of La Scala’s renovated museum. Pizzi is currently director of the Sferisterio Opera Festival in Macerta, Italy.
