Richard Berkeley-Steele made his U.S. debut as Siegfried in Seattle Opera’s 2001 Ring and returned to the 2005 Ring as Siegmund. In 2006, he was Eisenstein in Johann Strauss, Jr.’s Fledermaus at Seattle Opera. Recent engagements have included Laça in Janacek’s Jenufa at the Metropolitan Opera, Loge in Das Rheingold at Canadian Opera Company, Siegfried in English National Opera’s Götterdämmerung, Herod in Richard Strauss’s Salome at New York City Opera, Don José in Bizet’s Carmen and Laça at San Francisco Opera, and Siegmund and the title role of Britten’s Peter Grimes at Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. He sang Albert in Rachmaninoff’s Miserly Knight at both the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and the London Proms. Other U.K. credits include the title role of Wagner’s Lohengrin at E.N.O. and Florestan in Beethoven’s Fidelio with Welsh National Opera. In 2007, he sang Laça at Angers and Nantes, and returned to Covent Garden as General Sir Philip Wingrave in Britten’s Owen Wingrave. In 2008, Berkeley-Steele will appear as Aegisthus in Elektra at Seattle Opera.
