Susan Benson, a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts, has designed sets and costumes for theater, opera, and ballet productions in Canada, the United States, Australia, and Europe. Her opera credits include Britten’s Death in Venice, Verdi’s Forza del destino, Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, and Randolph Peters’ Golden Ass for Canadian Opera Company; Moore’s Ballad of Baby Doe for San Francisco Opera and New York City Opera; Sullivan’s Gondoliers for Australian Opera Company; and Mozart’s Magic Flute for Minnesota Opera and Dallas Opera. Benson’s set and costume designs were used in Seattle Opera’s 1994 production of Madama Butterfly, and her sets for Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, originally designed for the Banff Centre, will be seen here in 2009. Benson has also designed for the Stratford Festival of Canada, Royal Shakespeare Company, the Guthrie Theater, and the National Ballet of Finland.
