August 16, 2008, Seattle—Tonight from the stage of Marion Oliver McCaw Hall in Seattle, General Director Speight Jenkins announced the winners of Seattle Opera’s second International Wagner Competition. Elza van den Heever from South Africa and Michael Weinius from Sweden were selected from among the eight finalists by a panel of six distinguished judges.
During its Annual Meeting at McCaw Hall, Seattle Opera General Director Speight Jenkins announced that the company’s Artist of the Year awards went to tenor Lawrence Brownlee and set designer Thomas Lynch.
Greer Fowler, this month’s New Visions Artist, uses her oil paintings to elicit narratives of the every day. She captures her subjects taking part in otherwise unexamined routines. Her focus is the contemporary urban landscape and the ways in which people interact with it.

Verdi’s grandest of grand operas, Aida, opens Seattle Opera’s 2008/09 season in August. Aida is followed by Richard Strauss’s brooding drama Elektra in October.
Seattle Opera’s Springtime Serenade began the evening with champagne and sparkling performances from former Young Artists. The Gala ended with an amazing gift from the 375 attendees: an additional $72,000 for Seattle Opera’s education programs.
