By Giacomo Puccini

Internationally beloved for over a century, Puccini’s timeless classic enchants with glorious music of unparalleled passion and pathos. The elegant narrative recounts the whirlwind romance between a reckless American naval officer and a trusting geisha. Bound by tradition and honor, she alone must face the tragic aftermath when left abandoned. Musical highlights include the radiant “Flower Duet,” Butterfly’s poignant arias, and a rapturous love duet for the ages.

Kate Cherry’s “sublime, visually fantastic, must-see” (stuff.co.nz) production features new-to-Seattle sets and costumes, and the traditional staging also tips its hat to stylized Japanese theater.

Inspired by true events, Madame Butterfly is an often painful reminder of racial and cultural injustice found throughout America’s history. In July 2017, Seattle Opera is committed to participating in an open dialogue with the community on issues surrounding this work and will host a discussion open to all. Additionally, prior to performances, the lobby areas of McCaw Hall will be used for a large-scale exhibit, allowing audiences to consider the lasting impacts of American imperialism on people of Japanese and Asian ancestry which continued well into the 20th century. A month after Madame Butterfly closes, we will present An American Dream, a story depicting the incarceration of a Japanese American family in the '40s, to provide an essential second perspective for Madame Butterfly audiences.

By Gioachino Rossini

Filled with florals, frills, and frivolity, Rossini’s vivacious romp starts with an iconic overture, gains speed with a parade of familiar melodies, and concludes with an “all is forgiven” finale bubbling over with joy. The prequel to Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro finds quick-witted Figaro helping Count Almaviva whisk fair Rosina away from her ghastly guardian through a series of schemes fit for a Bugs Bunny cartoon. The “riotously funny” (The Australian) new production delights with colorful sets and costumes inspired by the seductive and playful spirit of southern Spain.

Two buddies don disguises to test the faithfulness of their fiancées—and soon the game is on! Will the women fall for their new suitors? And if they do, who is really to blame? This quirky comedy of (bad) manners endures as one of opera’s most astute masterpieces, distinguished by a steady stream of ravishing melody—the sweetest and most passionate music Mozart ever wrote. Jonathan Miller’s acclaimed contemporary production “may be the funniest and most dramatically successful show Seattle Opera has ever staged.” –The Seattle Times

By Hector Berlioz

Kick off Seattle’s citywide Shakespeare celebration with an all-new one-of-a-kind theatrical hybrid! Overheard confessions, unfortunate reactions, tender reconciliations, and plenty of witty banter glide on a warm breeze of masterful orchestration. In this novel adaptation of Shakespeare’s lively comedy Much Ado About Nothing, Berlioz’s exuberant opera score is paired with English text lifted directly from the Bard himself. The result: a crossover cultural event sure to have the whole town talking.

"The creative combination of Seattle Symphony Orchestra Maestro Ludovic Morlot and ACT Theatre Artistic Director John Langs will bring a freshness to Berlioz's unique opera." —Aidan Lang, Seattle Opera General Director

By Giuseppe Verdi

A profoundly personal love story told on a grand scale, Aida showcases Verdi's power to translate human emotions into magnificent music. The high-stakes love triangle between a captured princess, a conflicted military commander, and the King’s formidable daughter unfolds in a variety of Egyptian locales amid glorious spectacle and rousing choruses—including the famous Triumphal March.

This visually imposing all-new production includes hieroglyphic projections by noted street artist RETNA and evocative choreography by in-demand visionary Jessica Lang. Aida looms large as a monumental masterpiece of the highest order.

Just call us or request an exchange online any time after you receive your tickets and before 4 p.m. on the day of your performance (or 4 p.m. on Saturdays for Sunday matinees). There are no fees for ticket exchanges; however, upgrade charges may apply if you are changing to a more expensive day of the week or seat location.

Already know you need a different date for one of your 2017/18 operas? No problem. Place your subscription order, then request an early exchange. Your season ticket mailing will include your new tickets for the performance(s) into which you exchanged.
